With wins in his first two clay matches, Roger Federer is feeling a growing confidence in his choice of Jose Higueras as a possible coach.
The Spaniard is working on a trial basis this week at the Estoril Open, where Federer is keen to lift his first title of a season which began on the back foot with the Swiss suffering with glandular fever which compromised his Australian Open.
But despite the fact that he's lost the last two finals at Roland Garros to Rafael Nadal, the Swiss insists that he didn't begin his work with Higueras as a way to win in Paris.
“My main goal is not the French Open,” insisted the Swiss. “I'd love to win it, but Wimbledon still ranks as my No. 1 and the Olympics this year. After those comes come everything else.”
Federer says that he and Higueras will decide after this week about any future to the relationship. If the decision is positive, then the former champion could easily accompany Federer into next week's Monte Carlo Masters.
“I'll try my best in Paris, but the French is not why I hired Jose,” said Federer. “I hired him to help improve my game, to make me a better player.
”That will help me to do better in any event I play, including the French Open“, says Roger Federer.
While keeping most of his thoughts to himself Federer did hint at progress in the new arrangement. ”We've handled the first 3-4 days well. So far so good. I'm happy the way its going, we'll see what happens in the future.“
