  • Federer looking fine, defeats Hanescu in straight sets

    4/18/08 1:33 AM | Cheryl Murray
Federer looking fine, defeats Hanescu in straight sets Roger Federer joins number 2 seed Nikolay Davydenko in the quarterfinals. Federer had a commanding performance in his victory of Romania's Victor Hanescu.

“Well, that was better”. Surely this was the thought that went through the heads of Roger Federer, his coach, and all of the Federer fans out there who were made quite nervous by the world number one's rusty first round match against Olivier Rochus. Federer committed mounds of unforced errors, and was unable to capitalize on break point opportunities, and in the process, he lost the first set. His serve eventually pulled him through. His backhand was mediocre at best and his movement was questionable though; many were questioning his clay court form.

Thursday's match against Romanian Victor Hanescu went quite the other way. Federer's usually impeccable serve was not firing, but the rest of his game seemed to snap right in place. His backhand worked better, and even more importantly than that, his movement was much improved. Except for a quite humorous drop shot that he missed on his first match point, the Maestro looked good. Federer's legion of fans should not get excited too quickly, however. Hanescu did not play very well at all. He was weak on both the serve and the return portions of his game. He didn't get a single break chance in the match and won just over 50% of his own service points.

Roger Federer will next play either Joao Sousa, a qualifier who Federer hit with before the tournament began, or wildcard entrant Frederico Gil. The all Portuguese second round match was suspended due to rain.
