  • Estoril: A look back at day 3

    4/17/08 5:15 AM | Cheryl Murray
Estoril: A look back at day 3 Number five seed Gilles Simon is out with a back injury, but the other seeds on day three survive and are through to the quarterfinals.

Flavio Cipolla def. Gilles Simon (5) 6-2, 5-3 ret.

The 127 ranked Flavio Cipolla of Italy is into his first ATP quarterfinal ever with a big win today over Gilles Simon. Simon was heavily favored to win, but he started the match off poorly, getting broken by Cipolla in the first game. Things did not improve for the Frenchman. He was broken again in the first set, going 0/2 on break points saved. He had more opportunities in the second set; he broke Cipolla's serve twice, but had his own serve broken three times. He retired with a back injury at 5-3 down in the second (though one wonders why he couldn't just stick it out for one more game). Cipolla will meet Florent Serra in the quarters.

Florent Serra def. Rui MacHado 7-6 (5), 6-1

Rui MacHado, the surprise Portuguese wildcard fought valiantly in the first set. France's Florent Serra had a chance to serve for the first set, but MacHado broke, and eventually took the set to a tiebreak. Serra was able to squeak through the tiebreak, taking it 7-5. After he lost the first set, MacHado seemed to deflate a bit, perhaps losing the belief that he could actually win the match. He won just one game in the second set, and once Serra got momentum, he rolled impressively. Next up for Serra is Flavio Cipolla.

    Marc Gicquel (7) def. Thierry Ascione 7-6 (2), 6-3

Marc Gicquel seemed determined to gift the first set to Thierry Ascione. He was up a break right away, but Ascione came back to level the set. He went up a break again at 4-3,. but gifted the break back again. At 4-5, he had to save three set points. But after all of that, he was stronger in the tiebreak than Ascione and managed to pocket the set, ugly though it might have been. He was not quite as shaky in the second set, and Ascione helped. He seemed to lose confidence after he let the first set get away from him, and Gicquel was crafty enough to take advantage. Gicquel has a tough task ahead of him in the quarters; he will face the number two seed Nikolay Davydenko.
