Nicholas Almagro took his winning streak to 11 straight matches at Valencia, with a hard-fought 7-5, 6-3 win over qualifier Miguel Angel Lopez.
Almagro is looking to make it a hat-trick of Valencia titles this week but a big upset on the cards looked possible as Lopez went 5-3 up. However, once Almagro found his rhythm there was always only going to be one winner and he reeled off four straight games to take the set and the second was much more routine
Ferrer and Robredo were rarely troubled, both men looking to get their seasons back on track after poor recent results and they started well. Robredo made it 10 straight wins over Albert Montanes and Ferrer wore down the big serving Ivan Navarro 6-3, 6-4
6th seed Igor Andreev was another surprise casualty. He won the Valencia title in 2005 but has struggled in the Spanish city since then and the trend continued today, Evgeny Korolev putting his countryman out 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(4). Korolev now has a great chance of matching last year’s run to the quarters, he plays wildcard Daniel Gimeno-Traver who outmanoevered Sergei Stakhovsky 6-4, 6-4. Andreev’s form in Valencia post-2005 is all the more strange given that he’s based at the ATP venue all year round !
Christophe Rochus was forced to pull out of his clash with Argentina’s Eduardo Schwank with a neck injury. The Belgian was trailed 6-2, 4-1 when he called it quits
