  • Houston Wednesday Preview

    4/16/08 4:16 AM | Jonathan Morgan
     - 2006 champ Mardy Fish will be in action Wednesday, as well as Donald Young and several other fine players.

    Donald Young vs. Oscar Hernandez

A high quality affair here. The Spanish serve and volley of Hernandez on clay against Young, a thus far unproven commodity on clay. This one is about even in terms of the match up, but it will be interesting to see how Donald will handle a player like Hernandez on this surface. Young will need to hit many passing shots to win this match, something he is more than capable of doing. He will also have the advantage in the baseline rallies and should move the Spaniard around the court before being able to finish off the point moving in.

    Mardy Fish vs. Hugo Armando

2006 Houston Champ Mardy Fish will look to move into the Quarterfinals as his match against Armando. Fish here should have an easy time of things here as Armando's credentials on any surface are quite dodgy. Fish will look to use his serve and backhand, his game's strong points, to take control of the match. Armando should struggle to cope with the Fish game and will go down easily.

    Nicolas Massu vs. Sam Querrey

An interesting matchup here for sure. Sam Querrey the big serving American vs. Massu, the Chilean known for his epically long matches. Despite reaching the quarterfinals of the Acapulco event and beating Carlos Moya, Massu's results have been dreadful. Just a few weeks ago, he lost in a clay challenger in Italy to Pablo Andujar, rank- 147. Sam Querrey is coming into this match off of a Las Vegas title run a little over a month ago. Querrey's clay results are basically non-existant. He did make an attempt to shed the “Americans are bad on clay” argument by simply playing in the Estoril event last year. Neither player has put up good results, which is why such a match is fun to follow. This one is a true coin flip.
