Andy Roddick is already thinking ahead to September's Davis Cup semi-final against Spain, with the US a huge underdog on what promises to be slow red clay.
“I don't know if it's gonna do any good to sit here and freak out about it for the next three or four months, ” said the American who led his nation to a 4-1 World Group quarter-final win over france at the weekend.
With the final four date to be held in Spain on the slowest clay the Iberians can lay down, Roddick does know where his 32-times champions stand.
“I can assure you one thing: I know it's not convenient for us, I know we're not gonna be the favorites. But we're gonna go and we're gonna try.
”This team (which was picked for the tenth straight time by captain Patrick McEnroe) doesn't always play when it's convenient. That's probably different than some of the other countries.“
But Roddick admits that it will be all uphill for the visitors, who are defending the 2007 Davis title won over Russia.
”I don't see them being intimidated by us coming,“ he said of a squad led by three-time French Open winner Rafael Nadal and packed with talented clay-courters.
”But if we put a run together, we're going to feel a lot better about ourselves.“
