Finland's Jarkko Nieminen has returned to his Swedish tennis roots, hiring former ATP player Joakim Nyström in an effort to end a seven-match loss streak stretching back to the Australian Open.
The No. 26 man from the north last won a match in Melbourne on January 20 when he beat Philip Kohlschreiber before losing a quarter-final to Rafael Nadal.
Since then, he's lost six opening matches. Jarkko and Joachim will begin their collaboration at the Barcelona event from April 28, with Nieminen entered next week in Estoril.
Nyström played on Swedish Davis-Cup winning sides in 1984, 1985, and 1987 and once stood seventh in the rankings.
The 45-year-old earned eight singles titles and 13 in doubles. Nyström also coaches Sweden's Davis Cup team and has his hands full this weekend in Buenos Aires as his men face Argentina in the clay cauldron.
Nieminen will share Nystrom with Austrian Jürgen Melzer, who beat Nieminen at a Challenger event in Florida last month. Nieminen has worked with Swedish coaches before and often practises in Stockholm. His previous coach was Fredrik “Fidde”Rosengren who now is coaching Mario Ancic.
