  • TMS Miami: Davydenko vs Tipsarevic

     - Will Janko Tipsarevic prove to be the surprise package of this tournament ? With a few exceptions, most ATPs have had a surprise unseeded finalist this year - Tsonga at the Aussie Open, Nishikori in Delray Beach, Llodra in Rotterdam, Anderson in Las Vegas etc etc, the list just goes on

Tipsarevic would certainly fancy another crack at Roger Federer should the two meet in the semis, given the fright he gave the world no 1 down under at the start of the year. He’s met Davydenko once before, in the semis of Moscow last autumn, Tipsarevic’s best showing to date in an ATP but the Russian proved too strong, winning quite comfortably after a tight first set 7-6(6), 6-1

That was Davydenko’s first and only title of 2007, he’s been typically consistent without being spectacular so far in 2008. Yet to find top form in this tournament, he’s somehow found a way to come through every round despite being pushed to the brink. Having played Ancic on Tuesday he’ll have to withstand another serving barrage from Tipsarevic who’s no slouch in that department. Both men like to hit the ball fairly flat a lot of the time, Davydenko in particularly keeps a very high intensity by taking every shot as early as possible. Not naturally as big a hitter as Tipsarevic he has the more consistent forehand and uses the angles more while Tipsarevic tends to play straight up and down the lines. Tipsarevic won’t get any of the lapses he benefited from against Youzhny, he can win it but will have to play at a much more consistent level throughout
