Lleyton Hewitt has been pronounced fit to play after a scan on a dodgy hip, with the Australian No. 1 headed north to Townsville for next week's Davis Cup relegation tie with Thailand.
The Aussie was bounced out last week at the Miami Masters with his problem, but has now been cleared by doctors to try and help his nation back towards the elite Davis Cup World group.
Hewitt visited a sports medicine orthopedic surgeon for scans, which showed the injury could be a combination of a tear and tendonitis. Medicos recommended rest and treatment for the hip until the start of play next Friday.
“I'm extremely determined to play for my country in Townsville and will be doing everything in my power to be as close to 100 percent physically by Friday,”
Hewitt told his website.
“This tie is important for the team, as a win would give us the opportunity to compete in a play-off to make it back in the World Group where I believe Australia belongs.”
Should Australia get over Thailand, which is missing Paradorn Srichaphan as he recovers from wrist surgery, they play in September to return to the top Davis Cup grouping.
