This all-seed third round battle is something of a rarity in Miami this week, the only one in the top half of the draw
Both men progressed with surprising ease on Saturday, Youzhny defeating the big serving Bobby Reynolds 6-2, 6-2 and Almagro winning by the same scoreline against Arnaud Clement, a notable win given how easily the Frenchman had disposed of Mardy Fish in rd1
These two have never played before, Youzhny enjoyed a fabulous start to the year winning Chennai and making his 2nd grand slam quarter-final. However it’s tailed off since then, first round exits in Dubai and Rotterdam saw him slip out of the top 10 and he was outplayed by Lleyton Hewitt 7-5, 6-1 at this stage in Indian Wells
Almagro competes mainly on the clay and he really cashed in on the slightly weaker series of events in South America earlier this year, picking up two titles, beating the likes of Moya and Nalbandian along the way. He has some proven pedigree in past American hard court masters series, reaching the quarters in Cincinatti last year but exited at the first hurdle in Indian Wells to Nicholas Mahut
Youzhny is the harder hitter and has the more complete game for medium paced hard so I’d expect him to win but Almagro’s consistency to push it to 3 sets
