  • Miami 4th Round: Guillermo Canas vs. Igor Andreev

    3/31/08 3:38 PM | Jonathan Morgan
     - It was exactly a year ago, in Indian Wells and Miami where Canas took out Federer to announce his return to the tour with a big statement. Now he must defend his finalist points from last year and is looking good thus far.

In the last round, Canas played an extremely smart match by outsmarting and holding his nerves against big hitting Fernando Gonzalez. In his previous round, he won by outgrinding his opponent, a trademark of his.

Igor Andreev has reached this round with a simple win over Berrer and a hard fought victory over the Serbian Slayer Kevin Anderson.

This pair has met once before, but that was 3 years ago on clay, hardly a result worth mentioning in this hardcourt matchup.

But what is worth mentioning is that both players have had their most impressive results on clay, but have got quite enough game for hardcourts as well. Andreev's biggest weapon his his huge forehand with an intense amount of topspin on it. Canas is solid off of both wings and has acquired quite a strong serve since his return last year.

Canas will be able to cope with anything that Andreev can throw at him and should have the upper hand in this match. Andreev will begin to get frustrated with Canas' fine defense and grinding abilities and go for too much at one point in the rally. Canas for the win in typical grindage form.
