Spaniard Rafael Nadal will take on number 108 in the world Benjamin Becker in his 2008 Sony Ericsson Open debut.
All things considered, Rafael Nadal had quite a good tournament in Indian Wells last week. He battled some personal demons, in the form of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and James Blake. Tsonga is the young upstart from France who took the Spaniard out of the Australian Open in January. Nadal posted a three set win over the Frenchman in the round of 16, and then another over James Blake in the quarters. The Blake win was a particularly important one for Nadal, as he'd never beaten Blake before. He lost in the semifinals to eventual winner Novak Djokovic, but over all, Indian Wells was a success for the world number two.
He plays Benjamin Becker, a man bestl known for sending an ailing Andre Agassi into retirement at the 2006 US Open. Becker has reached two quarterfinals in 2008 in Memphis and Adelaide, but has not had good results at the “big” tournaments. He suffered a first round defeat at the Australian Open at the hands of Novak Djokovic, and another first round defeat at Indian Wells to Dmitry Tursunov. Nadal, though not necessarily known for his hard court prowess, made the semifinals of both of those tournaments. They have never played each other at an ATP level tournament. Nadal should win with ease.
