Gonzalez, Gasquet, Querrey, Berdych, Lopez, Del Potro. All these guys in action on Friday.
Richard Gasquet vs. Dmitry Tursunov
This will be the pair's 3rd meeting this year already. Gasquet won their encounter in Sydney while Tursunov got revenge in Dubai. Even those Gasquet is #8 in the world and Tursunov is in the mid-30's, this one is a rather even matchup. Gasquet will try to work to construct the points especially with his glorious backhand while Tursunov will try to free swing and power through the Frenchman. This one can go either way.
Juan Martin Del Potro vs. Feliciano Lopez
Del Potro is coming off an injury that has sidelined him since the Australian Open while Lopez lost to Donald Young last week. Like the Gasquet-Tursunov matchup, this one also looks to be about even. Lopez has been wretched all year save in Dubai where he played fantastic in reaching the finals. Other than that, though, he has just one win on the season. Del Potro was also able to beat Lopez twice last year on hard courts in straights both times. Despite Lopez's higher seeding, JMDP has an even shot.
Sam Querrey vs. Tomas Berdych
Big serving Sam Querrey is coming off his Las Vegas title a few weeks ago, but also a 2nd round loss to Hewitt last week. Berdych is #10 in the world and should have the advantage here. Querrey's ground game is nothing to write home about, and his serve is really his only weapon. Berdych has got some firepower all around but his mental strength is still quite immature. Berdych should win this, but Querrey scoring an upset wouldn't be earth shattering.
Pablo Cuevas vs. Fernando Gonzalez
A rematch of the Vina Del Mar “final” here. Gonzalez has had fantastic results on hard in his career, but has been quite pedestrian this year. He lost to Guccione in the Sunrise “challenger” last week nearby, but should have the upper hand here. His experience and firepower should be too much for the Uruguyan qualifier, but stranger things have happened this year, so why not?
