  • Rafael Nadal: I have to improve my serve

    3/19/08 10:44 AM | James Munoz
     - Nadal expressed concerns about is serve after his win and has been working on his serve before the match against Tsonga.

Wednesday, March 19, 2008 could arguably be the best day of tennis we have seen to this point when all the top players will be in action. We begin the day with an Australian Open rematch of Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland and Svetlana Kuznetsova. In their last encounter, the young Pole pulled off the upset 6-3, 6-4. Both have looked less than stellar lately but this rematch may ignite their competitive spirits and prove worthy of playing on the second largest tennis stadium in the world.

The next match on Stadium 1 is the rematch everyone wants to see, namely Rafael Nadal and Jo-Wilfred Tsonga. Can the Ali look-alike float around the net and sting with his groundstrokes and volleys once again? One concern for Rafael Nadal will be whether he can dictate the points on his service game. Yesterday, when I asked him about his serving he responded:

“I have to improve. So I have one more day. Yesterday I practice a lot, the serve. Tomorrow I not practice so much. I think that's work. I try to play very good match against Tsonga”.

Perhaps the match with the most ranking implications is world’s #8 Richard Gasquet (France) and #9 James Blake (USA). This will be their third matchup on hard courts as Richard Gasquet won both previous encounters in straight sets. Gasquet and Blake are also likely to meet in Davis Cup next month on a similar hard court encounter. Who will prevail is yet to be determined but the winner will definitely have the momentum to improve their ranking and provide a great quarterfinal matchup with the Nadal-Tsonga winner.

Other big matches of the day include: Guillermo Canas and Novak Djokovic; Surprise round of 16 players Hyung-Taik Lee and the other Swiss, Stanislas Wawrinka; David Nalbandian and Juan Carlos Ferrero; Andy Murray or Ivo Karlovic and Tommy Haas or Fernando Verdasco; Nikolay Davydenko or Mardy Fish and Lleyton Hewitt or Mikhail Youzhny.
