The surprise match-up of the 4th round, and a huge amount at stake - a place in the last 8 of Indian Wells, the furthest either man will have been in a masters series and earning the winner a huge chunk of points.
Wawrinka is ranked 17 places higher at 35 but given both players’ form in this tournament to date, there shouldn’t be much in it. Their last and only meeting was a 3 setter, Wawrinka coming through 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in the Toronto masters last summer on a similar surface, just slightly slower.
A lot will ride on how Lee has recovered from his marathon Monday win over David Ferrer, ending just short of 3 hours 7-6, 6-7, 7-6. He’s certainly done it the hard way to get this far, coming back from the brink against Nieminen in round 2, the Finn served for the match in set 2 but Lee came through 4-6, 7-6, 6-3. These results are all the more surprising given the Korean’s indifferent form leading into this tournament, winning just 1 match in two months.
Wawrinka rendered Marcos Baghdatis to a spectator at times in the last round, with the quality of his hitting during a 6-3, 6-7, 6-0 win. The Wawrinka backhand was especially impressive and with that being Lee’s strongest wing, the cross-court duel between those sides will be one of the keys to this match.
