     - Some surprising score lines and several minor upsets mark the opening day of the Pacific Life Open.

Given Robby Ginepri's form coming into Indian Wells, few could have expected Vince Spadea to beat him in their first round match. Ginepri has made the semi-finals in the last three hard court events he has entered and was the favored in their match. But his 6-1 6-1 routing of Spadea will make the other players in his section of the draw extremely nervous.

Hard-hitting Swede Robin Söderling also had an easier than expected match with French veteran Sebastien Grosjean. Soderling's ability has never been in doubt, but his consistency is another matter entirely. He had no trouble with Grosjean, who is an good hard courter in his own right. The 6-3 6-3 scoreline suggests that Soderling is in good form going into the second round.

In a bit of surprise, Israel's Dudi Sela took out the much higher ranked Nicolas Kiefer in three tight sets. Kiefer's bread and butter surface has been hard courts - this loss to Sela does not bode well for the German. Thursday generally was not a good day for German players - Benjamin Becker went down to the ball-bashing Russian Dmitry Tursunov, Dudi Sela took out Nicolas Kiefer and Rainer Schuettler was taken out by Italian clay courter Fabio Fognini.
