  • Hewitt keen to impress in Beijing

    3/14/08 7:30 PM | Johan Lindahl
     - After missing the 2004 Athens games, Lleyton Hewitt is already preparing for an Olympic run in Beijing this summer.

But the former No. 1, now ranked a disappointing 24th, says that he can completely understand why Andy Roddick is choosing to skip the trip and play on the ATP in Washington that second week of August.

“You can totally understand Andy's reasons,” he added. “I didnt play in Athens due to the schedule lead-up to the US Open. I thought it was the best preparation for me.

”At this stage, I am planning on playing,“ Hewitt said at Indian Wells at the first masters Series of the season. ”Its exciting to play in the Olympics and to play for Australia whenever possible.“

The 27-year-old Aussie, twice a champion at the Californian desert event. said that the Games are an important goal. He added that as tennis has the four majors each season, the Olympics do not take on quite the urgency they do for other sportsmen.
