27 year old Llodra has enjoyed his best ever start to the season this year. The Frenchman, previously best known for his doubles exploits, reached the Australian Open final in tandem with Arnaud Clement but has been causing a stir on the singles court aswell, picking up titles in Adelaide and Rotterdam to reach a new career high of 37
. He’ll be looking to take that form onto the US hard courts but had a slight setback last week with an first round loss in Vegas to surprise finalist Kevin Anderson. He’s among many dangerous floaters this week in Indian Wells, the dry desert heat makes the balls fly faster than usual through the air and is known for suiting serve-volleyers like Llodra.
Hyung-Taik Lee is now one of the veterans of the tour at 31, the Korean no 1 has been a regular in the top 75 for nearly a decade. Surprisingly, he’s only played Llodra once before, in Auckland earlier this year, the Frenchman winning 6-1, 6-4. Lee’s only played a handful of tournaments this season, picking up an injury in Marseille after a loss to Ferrero. He has a good record in the States, making the last 16 of the US Open and the latter stages of San Jose, Los Angeles and Washington in 2007. He went out at the first hurdle in the desert last year, 6-4, 7-5 to the upcoming Kohlschreiber
It’s one of those classic serve-volleyer vs gritty baseliner encounters that American fans relish. Players like Tim Henman and Todd Martin have always been hugely popular in this tournament over the years. Lee’s strength is the backhand, his serve is underated - very consistent. The forehand is the weaker wing, the side Llodra will no doubt target with chip-charges
Prediction: Llodra in straights but quite a close one featuring 1 tiebreak
