  • Acapulco Quarterfinal Summary

    2/29/08 2:48 PM | Cheryl Murray
     - Nicolas Almagro (6) rolls into the semifinals after posting another win on clay. Also through, Jose Acasuso and Luis Horna.

    Jose Acasuso def. Marcel Granollers-Pujol 7-6(2), 6-3

Spanish qualifier Marcel Granollers-Pujol surprised everyone by making his first quarterfinals on Thursday -- and for one set, it appeared that he was going to keep rolling through. Argentina's Jose Acasuso traded breaks with Granollers once in the first set, as the Spaniard continued to keep pace with him. It was not until the tie break that Granollers' backhand started to break down. Acasuso played a solid breaker, and took the set at two. The second set was a bit of a sloppy affair, but Acasuso was the more mentally strong and came away with the extra break that he needed to win the match.

    Nicolas Almagro (6) def. Nicolas Massu 4-6, 6-3, 6-3

Nicolas Almagro of Spain extends his winning record on clay to 12-1 for the year with his win over Chilean Nicolas Massu. Almagro's only loss on his favorite surface came when he withdrew from his quarterfinal match in Buenos Aires last week with an injury. Almagro, who has sometimes been known for losing focus when he is down in a match, stayed strong after losing the first set to a much improved Nicolas Massu. Almagro served beautifully for the remainder of the match; he was not broken again after the first set, and more importantly was two for two on break point chances. Next up for the Spaniard is Jose Acasuso.

Luis Horna def. Agustin Calleri 6-4, 3-6, 6-3

In the match of the day, Luis Horna won a hard-fought, high quality match against his doubles partner, Argentine Agustin Calleri. The first game set the stage for the rest of the match - Horna set up six break point opportunities, all of which Calleri saved. This battle got the crowd into the match from the start. Horna converted on his only other chance and took the first set. Both the second and third sets were an equally entertaining battle. Calleri took the second to level the match, snagging the only the only break opportunity he had. Horna would do the same in the third. At 40-15 down on Calleri's serve, Horna fought his way to deuce and eventually broke. Horna is now into his first semifinal since Vina del Mar last year.
