     - In second round action on Wednesday, Carlos Moya (2) is upset by an inspired Nicolas Massu. David Nalbandian and other seeds move on to the quarterfinals.

David Nalbandian (1) def. Santiago Ventura 6-2, 6-3

Another easy win for David Nalbandian sends him to the quarterfinals against the tough Italian Potito Starace, who he beat in the quarters of Buenos Aires last week. Spain's Santiago Ventura looked helpless against the Argentine. In the beginning of the match, he tried a bizarre number of poorly executed drop shots, which Nalbandian easily handled. Ventura generally seemed at a loss for a game plan, and the Argentine quickly and efficiently capitalized. Nalbandian has admitted that he is tired after winning the title in Buenos Aires, but as long as his opponents make it easy on him, he'll take the wins.

Nicolas Massu def. Carlos Moya (2) 6-4, 6-2

In the biggest surprise of the tournament, struggling Chilean Nicolas Massu took out tournament number two seed Carlos Moya in straight sets. Massu has had a dismal year on court so far. Until this tournament, he has suffered four straight first round defeats and looked far from the top ten player that he once was. Unfortunately for the Spaniard, he was brilliant once again in this match. He pummeled Moya with his vicious backhand, generating down the line winners with startling frequency. Next up for Massu is the red hot Nicolas Almagro.

Nicolas Almagro (6) def. Filippo Volandri 6-3, 6-3

Nicolas Almagro and Filippo Volandri have played each other six times, each has won three, and neither has won twice in a row - until now. Amagro beat the Italian earlier this year in the quarterfinals of Costa Do Sauipe, and has now repeated the feat, breaking the pattern. In particular, Volandri had some difficulty with his return game. The Spaniard smacked twelve aces for the match and staved off all but one of the five break points against him. Volandri is not strong enough on his own serve to win if he's having an off day on the return, as evidenced by the four breaks of serve Almagro was able to secure.
