In a day of controversy but few upsets, the top seeds move on to round two at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel.
Carlos Moya (2) def. Werner Eschauer 6-4, 6-4
Spanish veteran and former world number one Carlos Moya did not play a great match - mostly because he did not need to. His opponent, Austrian Werner Eschauer, offered little resistance and was unable to capitalize when Moya's form suffered. Both men played a sloppy first set, trading breaks of serve in five of the ten games played. The level of play in the second set was much better. Moya won every point on his first serve and was able to capitalize on the single break point chance he had on Eschauer. Next up for Moya is Chilean Nicolas Massu.
Luis Horna def. Fabio Fognini 6-4, 7-5
In a bit of a surprise, Peru's Luis Horna dispatched the young Italian Fabio Fognini in straight sets. Horna has had poor results in 2008; he has yet to advance past the second round of a tournament. In contrast, Fognini has had a fantastic start to the year, reaching the quarterfinals in Vina del Mar and advancing all the way to the semis in Costa Do Sauipe. Not surprisingly, Fognini looked fatigued both physically and mentally in this match. He gave Horna a fight when the Peruvian was trying to serve out the match at 6-5, but it would be too little too late. Horna will play Juan Monaco in round 2.
Guillermo Canas (4) def. Carlos Berlocq 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-4
Argentine grinder Guillermo Canas is back after being sidelined with left wrist tendinitis for more than four months - and what a way to come back! This was without doubt the most interesting (and controversial) of the first round matches in Acapulco. In the first set, Canas got the early break over his compatriot Carlos Berlocq, only to relinquish the lead. Another break for Canas secured the first set 6-4. The controversy took place in the second set. Canas held serve to send the second set to a tie break, when out of nowhere, Berlocq called for a trainer for an abdominal strain. Canas, suspecting that the injury was a tactic, promptly lost the tie break. Canas broke early in the third but Berlocq broke back; Canas won the match by breaking Berlocq's serve again at 4-5. After the three hour, eleven minute match, Canas accused Berlocq of gamesmanship. He will face Jose Acasuso next.
