India's Davis Cup squad is also in dis-array, with calls in the media for captain Leander Paes to step down. The sacking initiative for the former doubles standout has been fronted in local media over issues of “team spirit”.
The nation advanced in its last Asia-Oceania group match with a win over Uzbekistan. But the call comes amid a bitter internal battle over the failure of Paes to name originally Prakash Amritraj to the team.
Reports quote federation officials as saying they have received letter of complaint from four players, including Paes' on-again, off-again friend, enemy and former doubles partner Mahesh Bhupathi.
In his role as skipper, Paes had failed to select the No. 265 Amitraj for a “lack of commitment” after complaining about a stomach ailment before the February weekend tie a month ago. Paes said the player gotten ill from attending a party.
Amritraj was reluctantly brought into the fold for reverse singles. “We are not prepared to play Davis Cup if Leander is captain”, the Times of India quoted from a player letter of complaint.
