  • Acapulco Day Two Preview

    2/26/08 6:02 PM | Cheryl Murray
Acapulco Day Two Preview Acapulco -- Carlos Moya and Guillermo Canas headline Tuesday's first round matches in a jammed packed day at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel.

    Carlos Berlocq vs. Guillermo Canas

In his first match since November of 2007, Guillermo Canas will take on fellow Argentine Carlos Berlocq. Canas has been recovering from left wrist tendinitis, and was forced to withdraw from Costa Do Sauipe, where he was the defending champion. He has never met Carlos Berlocq at an ATP level event, but they have clashed three times in Challengers tournaments; Canas won all three. If Canas is 100% healthy, he has a good chance at capturing his first ATP win for the year, though it may take a set or set and a half to shake off the rust. Canas in 3.

Carlos Moya (2) vs. Werner Eschauer

Tournament number 2 seed Carlos Moya will be looking to redeem himself after his first round loss to Jose Acasuso last week in Buenos Aires. He was noticeably tired in that match, having made the final of Costa Do Sauipe just days before. Austria's Werner Eschauer won't be as lucky; Moya should be well rested for this first round encounter. The two men have met just once, at Amersfoort in 2007, which Eschauer won 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-4. The Austrian has had poor results this year, however. He has had a string of first round defeats, and should be an easy target for Moya. Moya in 2.

    Luis Horna vs. Fabio Fognini

One of the more tantalizing matches in the first round is this first-time meeting between Luis Horna and Italian upstart Fabio Fognini. Fognini has had a fantastic clay court season in 2008, already reaching the quarterfinals in Vina del Mar and the semifinals in Costa Do Sauipe. Peruvian veteran Horna has not had such success. He has yet to advance past the second round in the three tournaments he has played so far, and the likelihood of his doing so in Acapulco seems unlikely. Fognini in 3.
