  • Acapulco Day One Summary

    2/26/08 3:27 PM | Cheryl Murray
     - In day one action, 7 seed Igor Andreev is upset and Mexico's wildcard hope is sent home in straight sets.

Albert Montanes def. Igor Andreev (7) 7-6(4), 6-3

Igor Andreev has already lost in the first round in three tournaments this year; after his straight set loss to Albert Montanes, he will add another. Andreev broke early in the first set to gain the lead, but he allowed Montanes to break back and level the set again at 5-5. By the time the tie break rolled around, Andreev was once again the same out of sorts played he had been for much of 2008. The win is especially painful for Andreev because he had a favorable draw through the quarterfinals.

Juan Monaco (3) def. Juan Pablo Brzezicki 6-3, 2-6, 6-3

In his first match win since spraining his ankle in Vina del Mar, Juan Monaco trounced number 99 ranked Juan Pablo Brzezicki, Monaco's Argentine countryman. The first set was a bit sloppy, and featured four breaks of serve, three going to Monaco, one to his opponent. Brzezicki seemed to get a bead on Monaco's serve in the second set. He got six break point chances, converted two and faced no break points on his own serve. Monaco's movement seemed hampered, and it looked like he would suffer a consecutive first round loss. He started to find his game again in the third set. He broke on his first opportunity early in the set, and never relinquished the lead again.

    Marcel Granollers-Pujol def. Bruno Rodriguez 6-3, 6-3

Mexican wildcard and world number 439 ranked player Bruno Rodrgiuez lost in his first ever ATP tournament appearance to Spain's Marcel Granollers-Pujol. Rodriguez had continuous problems on his own serve, giving Granollers-Pujol ten break point chances in the match. His return game did not fare much better; he only won five of twenty-nine points played on the Spaniard's first serves. Next up for Granollers-Pujol is Albert Montanes, who upset Igor Andreev on Monday.
