Acapulco - Both the men's and women's tours head to the Mexican Riviera this week for the Abierto Mexicana Telcel. In action on Monday are Juan Monaco and Nicolas Almagro.
Marcel Granollers-Pujol vs. Bruno Rodriguez
Mexican hopeful Bruno Rodriguez will take the court in front of the home crowd. This Mexican wild card is ranked 436 in the world and has earned $118.00 in prize money this year. Spain's Marcel Granollers-Pujol should have little difficulty dispatching Rodriguez, whose only tournament this year was a future's tournament, which he lost in the first round. Granollers-Pujol in 2 easy sets.
Juan Monaco (3) vs. Juan Pablo Brzezicki
In this first round match between Argentines, the question on everybody's mind is the fitness of Juan Monaco. He injured his ankle three weeks ago playing a doubles match before his scheduled final against Fernando Gonzalez; he was forced to withdraw. His first tournament back from injury was last week's event in his home town of Buenos Aires. He bombed out in the first round to Agustin Calleri. He's already beaten Brzezicki this year in Vina del Mar. Assuming he ankle sprain has sufficiently healed, he should win handily. Monaco in 2.
Igor Andreev (7) vs. Albert Montanes
Igor Andreev holds a career 4-0 edge over Spainiard Albert Montanes, most recently beating him in a tight match in Buenos Aires last week. Montanes pushed both the second and third sets to tie breakers. Andreev went out in the quarterfinals of that event to Jose Acasuso 6-3 1-6 3-6. Though he has not had spectacular results in 2008, Andreev will have to be the pick in this match. Andreev in 3 tough sets.
