Buenos Aires - The bottom half of the draw will take the court on Thursday at the Copa Telmex. With the two highest seeds knocked out in the first round, a spot in the final is completely up for grabs.
Igor Andreev (6) vs. Jiri Vanek
Russia’s Igor Andreev will play Jiri Vanek of the Czech Republic for a spot in the third round. Andreev has had a slow start to the clay season in 2008. He lost in the first round at the Brasil Open and struggled in his first round match this week. Still, even in current form he will still be difficult to beat. Andreev and Vanek have met each other twice; both times on clay and both easy wins for Andreev. Expect Thursday’s match to produce similar results. Vanek simply does not have enough weapons to hurt Andreev. Andreev in 2.
Jose Acasuso vs. Daniel Gimeno-Traver
Jose Acasuso beat Spanish qualifier Daniel Gimeno-Traver in an easy straight set match in Vina del Mar a few weeks ago. Acasuso advanced to the quarterfinals of Vina del Mar, losing to Pablo Cuevas. He has not had, perhaps, the start to 2008 that he would have wanted, but an excellent first round win over third seed Carlos Moya will set the tone for the rest of this tournament. Acasuso in 2.
Filippo Volandri (8) vs. Sergio Roitman
Sergio Roitman seems to be stuck in the second round. Except for a first round loss to Denis Gremelmyer at the Australian Open, Roitman has gotten to and halted at the second round of each tournament he’s entered this year. He will be hoping to break that streak on Thursday, as he takes on the number 8 seed, Filippo Volandri. It seems more likely, however, that the second round curse will continue. Volandri had a fantastic year on clay last year, and seems to be finding his groove again this year. Volandri in 3.
