Nothing completely out of the ordinary happening today in San Jose, with the exception of the horrible Querrey loss.
Mardy Fish def. Tim Smyczek 6-3, 6-4
No surprises here. Fish simply dismantled a much younger, inexperienced player. However, Smyczek put up more of a fight than expected, and actually broke Fish's serve twice. In the end though, Fish was simply better. He was pressuring Smyczek's serve on basically every service game, and the youngster was saving break points every game. Fish was able to win about half the points played on Smyczek's serve, a great number. Fish will play Denis Gremelmayr in the next round.
James Blake def. Sam Warburg 6-3, 6-1
Well, apparently fatigue is not an issue for Blake as he flew across the country. He played and lost the Delray final on Sunday, but comes into San Jose and picks up right where he left off, beating down a lesser opponent. Blake was never troubled on serve, and never even faced a single break point. He broke Warburg 4 times and cruised, using his big serve and forehand to dominate the match. Warburg had no answers. Blake will play Jesse Levine in the 2nd round.
Benjamin Becker def. Marcos Daniel 6-1, 3-0, ret.
Becker was absolutely dominating this match against the Brazilian Daniel, who simply had no answers. Daniel is much more comfortable on a clay court and it definitely showed here. Midway through the second, Daniel retired with an injury. We can only hope for a speedy recovery. Becker, meanwhile, will face off with Guillermo Garcia-Lopez tomorrow.
Yen Hsun-Lu def. Max Mirnyi player profile" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #000;">Max Mirnyi 7-6(4), 5-7, 6-2
A wild match of missed opportunities this one was. Mirnyi was an astounding 1/16 on break point chances, and Lu's serve is nothing near diabolical. Mirnyi threw down 17 aces and was not broken until the 3rd set when Lu simply upped his play. Miryni could have won this match in two, but Lu was able to stave off all those break points, hold his nerve, and get into the next round. Lu will play Lucky Loser Wayne Odesnik in the next round, a 3 set first round winner over Donald Young.
Robby Ginepri def. Jesse Witten 6-2, 5-7, 6-4
Ginepri was supposed to play Mike Russell, but he was the latest injury casualty here in San Jose. He played instead the Lucky Loser Jesse Witten. Ginepri was able to dominate the first set, serving at an 87% clip and not facing a break point. He broke Witten twice for an wasy set. The 2nd set was a bit more of a rollercoaster as 5 breaks were exchanged and return of serve became more vital. Witten eventually took it 7-5. In the 3rd set, Witten was killing Ginperi's 2nd serve, but the veteran buckled down, saved 3 break points and scored the win with a single break, 6-4 in the 3rd. Ginepri will face off with Kristof Vliegen in the next round.
