Action at the Copa Telmex gets under way Monday afternoon as the Argentine contingent attempts a good showing for the home country crowd.
Boris Pashanski vs Potito Starace
Potito Starace and Boris Pashanski will be the first up on Court Central on Monday in the opening round. Starace, the number 35 seed from Italy, had his best year ever in 2007, but he is still looking for his first ATP win in 2008. He played poorly and lost to Ivo Minar last week at the Brasil Open. Serbia's Boris Pashanski holds a 1-0 career edge over Starace. They played last year on clay in Sopot. Pashanski was up a break in the third set when Starace retired. Pashanski has not had great results in 2008 so far. He's had 2 first round losses and made the second round last week in Costa do Sauipe. If Starace finds the form he's capable of, he should win. Starace in 3.
Carlos Berlocq vs Jiri Vanek
Buenos Aires' own Carlos Berlocq will take on Jiri Vanek from the Czech Republic. The two men have never met in an ATP event before, but they have played each other twice on the Challengers and Futures tours. Vanek won both of those encounters, though they were in 2003 and 2005. Berlocq has had the better 2008 results. He has already appeared in a Challenger's final and he got to the quarterfinals of Vina del Mar a few weeks ago. Vanek has yet to win a match in 2008. Berlocq in 2.
Maximo Gonzalez vs Luis Horna
Argentine wildcard Maximo Gonzalez will try to defeat Peruvian veteran Luis Horna for the first time. The two men met at the Montevideo Challengers event in 2007. Horna won the match easily at 6-2,6-2. The result of this match will depend on Horna's recurring elbow injury. If he's feeling well, he's more than capable of beating Gonzalez. This will be Gonzalez's first match in 2008.
