  • Costa do Sauipe quarterfinal summary

    2/16/08 6:19 PM | Cheryl Murray
     - Costa do Sauipe - In a day of three set matches, the top two seeds advance in dramatic fashion to set up an exciting semifinal.

Carlos Moya (1) def. Oscar Hernandez 6-3,3-6,7-5

It was a close call for the number one seed. The first set was routine enough for Carlos Moya, though even in that set he had to fight off three break points. The set was decided by one break of the Hernandez serve. Moya's return let him down in the second set. He made no inroads at all on his countryman's serve, not even making a dent on Hernandez's second serve. Moya was not playing well at all. Hernandez got an immediate break and insurance break in the third. Moya, it appeared, was finished. But he held on, eventually breaking back twice to level the match and then at 5-5 broke once again to finally seal the match.

Nicolas Lapentti def Eduardo Schwank 1-6,6-4,7-6(4)

Ecuador's Nicloas Lapentti got off to a very slow start against his sometimes doubles partner Argentine Eduardo Schwank. He served poorly, could not convert the two break points he had and was eventually broken in three of his four service games. He served considerably better in the second set. In fact, Schwank had no break opportunities at all in the second. Schwank seemed to lose his momentum after a rain delay in the start of the second. He fought well in the third and actually had three match points against Lapentti. It would be the thirteenth time in Lapentti's career that he has come back after having match points against him.

Fabio Fognini def Ivo Minar 6-7(2),6-2,6-3

Fabio Fognini continued his excellent start to 2008 with a solid win over Czech player Ivo Minar. Fognini has already reached the quarterfinals this year, at the tournament in Vina del Mar and now he can add his first semifinal to those results. The first set was a good battle. Evenly matched throughout the set, the difference was that Minar played a much better tie break. Fognini was not rattled, as one might have expected. Minar's level dropped, but Fognini was solid throughout the rest of the match.
