Thursday was a clear beatiful day of no rain. Therefore, tennis was the order of the day.
James Blake def. Paul Capdeville 6-1, 6-4
No surprise here, as Blake dismissed Capdeville fairly easily. An absolute clinic in the first set as Blake wasn't even pressured on his on serve, losing just 3 points in the set. He also won 57% of his return points and just never let Capdeville into it. The 2nd set was a bit tight as Blake had to save quite a few break points. Capdeville was able to break Blake, but James went right back to take the set and match 6-4. He will play Kunitsyn in the Quarterfinals.
Mardy Fish def. Ivan Navarro 2-6, 7-5, 6-3
Fish battles to make the quarters. Navarro jumped out to a quick first set win with his great touch and feel game. Fish didnt even have a break point in the first set. He and Fish went back and forth in the 2nd set with 7 total breaks in the set until Fish was able to get the late break before taking the 3rd. Fish will face Ginepri in the next round.
Vincent Spadea def. Gilles Muller, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3
Another great 3 setter as Spadea pulls out the win. Bit of a rollercoaster this match. Spadea was solid in the first set, not facing a break point and winning the set. He then gets up 3-0 in the 2nd set before eventually losing it 6-4. Luckily, the veteran was able to claw back and take the 3rd set in solid form, not facing a break point once again. He plays Querrey.
Sam Querrey def. Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-4, 5-7, 6-4
Another fantastic 3 set match today as Querrey and GGL went back and forth all match long. Breaks were common, 7 in all. After taking the first set, Querrey faced 8 break points and might have lost the set earlier, but he was able to save 6 of them before losing 7-5. He regained his composure taking the 3rd set, saving 4 break points and taking one. He will play Vince “Ice” Spadea next.
Also winning today were Igor Kunitsyn over Miryni, the young Kei Nishikori making a name for himself taking out Delic in 3 sets, and Bobby Reynolds beating Diego Hartfield in a tough 3 set match in a 3rd set tiebreak.
