As round two wraps up, the top two seeds remain firmly entrenched in the draw. In fact, only one seed lost in round two, which is good news for a tournament that saw the top half of the draw decimated in the first round.
Carlos Moya (1) def. Olivier Patience 5-7,6-1,6-0
Carlos Moya looked as though he was still trying to find his clay court footing in the first set. He had a similar problem in his first round match; he did not look 100% comfortable on the surface after playing on hard courts. Patience was able to take advantage of one of the two break point opportunities and took the first set. Moya definitely found his form since, which is good news for him, and bad news for the rest of the draw. Good serving and excellent returning had him losing just one more game in the match. Next up for Moya is Oscar Hernandez.
Fabio Fognini def Albert Montanes (8) 7-5,6-3
Fognini seems to be carrying his momentum from an excellent quarterfinal showing in Vina del Mar two weeks ago. He took out the eighth seeded player Albert Montanes in impressive fashion. In the first set, Fognini had an amazing twelve break point opportunities; it is a credit to Montanes' own serving (he broke Fognini twice) that he did not lose the first set by a wider margin. Fognini defended well in the second set. He had five break points against him and saved every one of them; he had just one opportunity on Montanes' serve which would be all he needed.
Nicloas Almagro (2) def. Boris Pashanski 6-2,6-3
After his impressive display on Thursday, Almagro is definitely a contender for the Costa do Sauipe title. It took him one hour and nineteen minutes to dispatch Serbia's Boris Pashanski. Almagro was extremely tough on his own serve winning all but one point on his first serve in the entire match. Pashanski never had a chance to get into the match. Almagro quite simply smothered him with heavy groundstrokes, causing the Serb to be on the run almost every point. Next up for Almagro is Filippo Volandri.
