  • Federer to play If Stockholm Open

    2/13/08 12:30 PM | Johan Lindahl
     - If Stockholm Open celebrates its 40th anniversary this year and can already present an exceptionally strong line-up. Roger Federer and David Nalbandian have already signed as well as Swedish favourites Robin Söderling, Thomas Johansson and Jonas Björkman.

There have been rumors about Federer coming to Stockholm this autumn and they were confirmed at a press conference today by a proud tournament director. Roger Federer has been dominating the tennis tour during the last years and just celebrated four years as the world number one. Not surprisingly, he is at the top of every tournament's wish list.

David Nalbandian had a fantastic couple of months at the end of last year, defeating Roger Federer twice, and claiming ATP Masters titles in Madrid and Paris. He is currently the world number nine.

Naturally, tournament director Per Hjertquist was very happy to announce such a strong line-up for this year’s edition of the tournament.
-This is by far the best thing that has happened to Stockholm Open since Björn Borg and John McEnroe played, Per Hjertquist says to Tennistalk.com.

In 2006, Rafael Nadal and John McEnroe participated and those two players alone gave the tournament a much needed boost in terms of publicity and interest. If Stockholm Open needs to attract top names at least every second year to maintain the tournament status among players and the public.

If Stockholm Open kicks off at October 4th, 2008.
