Carlos Moya defeated fellow Spaniard Santiago Ventura in three tough sets in the first round of the Brasil Open.
This match was Moya's first for the year on clay - and it showed. He did not play particularly well. In the first set alone, he double faulted three times. Despite this relatively poor level of play, Moya did not face a single break point in the first set. It seemed the occasion of playing a high-profile player got to Ventura. He won only 57% of his first serve points and 30% of second serve points; it was surprising that Moya did not manage to break more than once.
Ventura cleaned his game up considerably in the second set. Interestingly, when Ventura was not donating errors, he dictated play and made Moya look like an average player. He had three break point opportunities and converted one, taking the set at 6-4.
It looked as though nerves crept back into Ventura's game in the third set. Moya began to punish Ventura's second serve, precipitating a rash of double faults. He donated a staggering six double faults in the third set alone. Moya broke just one time, but that was all he needed. Ventura once again had no opportunities on Moya's serve.
