Serbia begins its World group tie in Moscow with a double disadvantage with both Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic and No. 2 Janko Tipsarevic forced out by illness.
The pair of absentees balance the Russian loss of Marat Safin, ruled out through a small bone fracture in his leg.
Djokovic pulled up pale and ill a few hours before his scheduled opening rubber, immediately replaced by inexperienced doubles specialist Nenad Zimonjic, who faces Mikhail Youzhny.
Russia chances have increased, with No. 4 Nikolay Davydenko to later face Victor Troicki. The Serbs hope the chronically fragile Djokovic might be able to front up for Saturday doubles, likely to be a desperation rubber for the visitors.
Djokovic joins a list of Davis Cup absentees, including both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

Did you know that... Arnaud Clement and Fabrice Santoro fought during 6 hours and 33 minutes in the longest match ever played, in French Open 2004.

Zimonjic and Troicki fought well, I'm impressed!
