Juan Monaco tore ankle ligaments in his doubles match and was forced to withdraw from the final. Gonzalez took the opportunity to save 2 match points and beat the story of the tournament, Pablo Cuevas.
After Monaco won his singles match, he had doubles to play. During the match, running down a ball, he got tangled up with a chair and tore some ankle ligaments. He will miss the Davis Cup and wont be able to defend his title in Buenos Aires. His participation in Indian Wells and Miami are suspect.
Gonzalez and Cuevas both knew that their semi was indeed, the final, with Monaco out. Cuevas continued his great form during the week, taking a hotly contested 1st set into a tiebreak and taking it 7-4. The 2nd set was more of the same as Cuevas and Gonzalez matched stroke for stroke into another tiebreak. However, Cuevas then got tight and lost a lead in the tiebreak. He had 2 matchpoints but could not convert. Gonzalez took it 8-6. Cuevas seemed to lose his heart to fight after that, as he went down tamely in the 3rd set.
Gonzalez will now play Santiago Ventura, the loser of the other semifinal, in an exhibition match tomorrow. He will then be rewarded the trophy following that.
