  • Gonzalez and Cuevas win to set up semi-final battle

     - Gonzalez finally shows some good form in a match this tournament, while Cuevas continues his great run this week, sending the 7th seeded Acasuso packing.

Pablo Cuevas def. Jose Acasuso, 6-3, 6-3

Acasuso was up an early break in the first, but after that, it was all Cuevas. His backhand, and indeed, his whole game has been on fire this week. He is the first Uruguyan player in the semifinals of an ATP tournament in about a decade. He is now ranked in the top 100 due to his great run this week, and has an opportunity to make it even higher.

Fernando Gonzalez def. Carlos Berlocq, 7-5, 6-0

Gonzalez seemed to sleep through his first two matches, but this one, he played much better in. He served at 4-5 in the first set, and Berlocq had 2 set points to win the first, but Gonzalez held serve. After that, it was all downhill for Berlocq, as Gonzalez played much better to win 9 games straight with that 2nd set bagel.

In the Semifinal, this one can go either way. If Cuevas can go backhand to backhand in the rallies, he could have the edge. I'm not sure if Cuevas will be able to pull off the upset, but he surely has a chance.
