Berlocq takes out defending champ Horna while Gonzalez plays another sloppy match to scrape through.
Carlos Berlocq def. Luis Horna - Both started out the match sloppy. As it went on however, Horna appeared to show some nerves and made more errors, allowing Berlocq to play more aggresively and without fear. He won the first set in a tiebreak. In the 2nd set, Horna basically dominated, not allowing Berlocq to have any rhythm, not hitting any errors, and won the second set 6-3. In the final set, both men were playing well, but Horna got the break. As he was serving at 3-2, 40-15, he began to collapse. A few bad errors and a good service game from Berlocq and we were back on serve. Horna began to lose his temper and concentration. At one point, he received coaching from the stands and lost the point due to an alert linesman telling the chair. Berlocq seized the opportunity, fought like a dog, hit some wild winners, took the 3rd set tiebreak, and thus, the match in just over 3 hours. Berlocq's down the line backhand worked extremely well for him today.
Fernando Gonzalez def. Diego Hartfield - Another wild, erratic performance from Gonzalez, but he still managed to get through, and in straights. Hartfield could have won this match, but he countered Gonzalez's wretched play, with a game standard a notch below even Gonzo's. Berlocq and Gonzalez will face off in the next round, and i would not be surprised at all to see Berlocq take it. Then again, Gonzalez wins playing like a challenger player, so who knows.
