    1/30/08 9:02 AM | Cheryl Murray
Gaston Gaudios comeback no success Gaston Gaudio played his first match since injuring his ankle a while ago but only managed to get three games against Fabio Fognini. Hometown favorite Nicolas Massu also lost in the first round.

    Fognini def Chela 7-6(0), 6-2

Despite the fact that Juan Ignacio Chela was the number 2 ranked player, Fabio Fognini's straight set victory on Tuesday was really no surprise. Chela has been in poor form for at least six months; it is not good news for his team that he lost in the first round on his favorite surface. The first set was competitive; there were no breaks of serve, though each man had chances. Just when the crowd settled in for a a well-fought tie break, Chela's game fell apart. Fabio Fognini took the tie break at love and rolled through the second set.

    Ventura def Gaudio 6-3, 6-0

Interest was focused on Gaston Gaudio player profile" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #000;">Gaston Gaudio, who is coming off an ankle injury. Ventura's easy victory did little to quell the suspicion that the Argentine had not sufficiently recovered from his injury. A visibly distressed Gaudio indicated that retirement lay heavily on his mind. He still intends to play the clay tournament in Buenos Aires, where he says he hopes to find enjoyment in tennis again.

    Roitman def Massu 6-7(3),7-6(4),6-3

Hometown favorite Nicolas Massu was beaten in his first round match late Monday night by Argentine Sergio Roitman. Massu actually played better for much of the match, especially in the first two tightly contested sets. Both players, in fact, won an equal number of points in the match; Roitman was simply able to hold his intensity better in the third set.
