Easy wins for the favourites sets ut exciting encounters in round four.
Novak Djokovic (3) def Sam Querrey (6-3, 6-1, 6-3)
Sam Querrey is a promising young American, but it came as no surprise that he was beaten soundly by Serbia's Novak Djokovic. Querrey relies heavily on his first serve to get free points and in this match, he only managed to get 8 aces past Djokovic. The Serb was too efficient on his own serve and MUCH better on the return than Querrey. Djokovic will meet Lleyton Hewitt in the round of 16.
David Ferrer (5) def Vince Spadea (6-3, 6-3, 6-2)
Another routine win for David Ferrer should leave him in good shape for the round of 16. American veteran Vince Spadea had only 2 break point opportunities on the Spaniard's serve and converted neither of them. Spadea didn't play terribly, but Ferrer quite simply did everything better. His serve was better, his return was better and he donated only 14 errors. Ferrer will play fellow Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero in the fourth round.
Juan Carlos Ferrero def David Nalbandian (6-1, 6-2, 6-3)
Of the matches in the second quarter of the draw, this is the only surprise result. Nalbandian had come into the Australian Open on the strength of 2 Masters-Series wins in Madrid and Paris where he beat Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. Nalbandian could not seem to dial in on his backhand - or his forehand for that matter. He committed a whopping 38 unforced errors and only had 13 winners. Everything was working well for the Spaniard, who seemed quite content to allow Nalbandian to self-destruct.
