  • Preview: Roger Federer - Tomas Berdych

     - Defending champ and world #1 Roger Federer is coming off a late night 5 set affair with Janko Tipsarevic that ended well past everyone on the planet's bed time. Federer showed his mental and physical prowess and won 10-8 in the fifth.

In his post match interview, he assured everyone that a tough fought match like that wouldn't slow him from winning this title. He also said that 5 setters were good for him, to know where he stands and what he needs to work on.

Tomas Berdych, on the other hand, is the tall, hard-hitting Czech that has won his first few matches rather easily. His match in the last round with Argentine Juan Monaco was a bit tough, but he overpowered him to make it to this 4th round.

Berdych and Federer have something of a history, as it was a young Tomas that beat Federer in the Athens Olympics back in 2004. Since then, however, Federer has beaten Berdych 5 times, and all in dominating fashion.

Berdych also has an affinity of losing in the 4th round of majors. He did just that twice in 2007, and 3 times in 2006, including twice to Roger.

This match should feature hard hitting from the Berdych side, a possible boost of confidence for the Czech, seeing Tipsarevic taking Federer to the distance, and big serving from both. Expect Federer to be able to absorb the power from Berdych's side and send it right back at him, as he's done in all their previous matches.

Making predictions, especially during this Aussie fortnight has been tough, but Federer should pull through this one, barring other-worldy play from Berdych.

Berdych is a huge underachiever when it comes to facing the top players in the world. He will get rolled by Fed in straight sets.

You are absolutely right about that. Berdych has only won one match against players ranked in the top 20 in a grand slam. It was against Kiefer in french open 2006 and then Kiefer had to retire... It will be an easy win for Federer, I think ´he is very sharp after the tough match two nights ago

He need to get his head together then he will be a good player. But I guess it's not that easy...
