4 days ago Sergei Stakhovsky was looking at the next flight out of Zagreb after losing in the final round of qualifying but after Michael Llodra’s late withdrawal the Ukranian got a second chance and now he’s in the semis ! Janko Tipsarevic was the latest to fall to Stakhovsky’s flashy brand of tennis; 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 in over 2 hours
Tipsarevic served superbly in the first set (75% first serves) and took a deserved lead, breaking twice from 3-3. However the Serb could not maintain the level, falling to just 46% 1st serves in the second. Stakhovsky still had few chances but when it came at the business end of set 2, he made it count, levelling somewhat against the run of play.
Suddenly the momentum completely shifted going into the third, Stakhovsky striking the more fluently and letting rip off that forehand with devastating effect. He ran away with the decider, breaking twice to put the match beyond doubt
It’s his first ATP semi-final and Stakhovsky remains as stunned as anyone at his sudden success this week; “I never thought I would get so far in Zagreb. Immediately after the qualifying defeat, I found out I was the lucky loser, and then I’ve had the best results of my career. I have been playing well in the main tournament because there’s been no pressure.”
He faces Simone Bolelli who ousted Olivier Rochus 7-6(5), 6-4 in the final match of the day
