  • Federer Continues Domination of Hewitt

Roger Federer is through to the Wimbledon quarterfinals after dispatching Lleyton Hewitt in straight sets on a wild Monday at the All-England club. Next up for the world No. 1 is Mario Ancic.

Roger Federer defeated Lleyton Hewitt for the twelfth straight time on Monday, knocking out the Aussie 7-6(7), 6-2, 6-4 in the third round of Wimbledon.

It was not the easiest of straight-set victories. Both players held comfortably in each of their first six service games as set one progressed to a tiebreaker. The decider featured several mini-breaks, including one by Hewitt when Federer had the set on his racket at 6-4. The No. 20 seed also saved another set point at 5-6, but Hewitt never could gain a set point of his own and Federer finally finished things off with his ninth ace of the match.

Federer's return of serve really picked up in set two and he capitalized on both of his break points. Hewitt, on the other hand, failed to take advantage of his three break chances.

Squandered opportunities plagued Hewitt again in a more competitive third frame of play. Federer's service percentage began to dip and that allowed the Aussie five break points, but Hewitt never could capitalize on any of them. One break was all Federer needed as the Swiss closed out the match with two aces in the final game and big serve on match point that Hewitt dumped into the net.

Mario Ancic awaits Federer in the quarterfinals. The 6'5'' Croat survived a fourth-round epic against Fernando Verdasco 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 13-11 in three hours and 49 minutes. Federer is 5-1 in their six head-to-head meetings, but Ancic is the last man to beat Federer at Wimbledon. He did so in their first-ever meeting back in a 2002 opening-round clash.

  • Thumbs up

Federer fired 21 aces and won more than half of Hewitt's second-serve points.

  • Thumbs down

Hewitt was 0 for 8 in break-point chances.
