  • Nadal brushes aside Schuettler, sets up 3rd final with Federer

    7/4/08 6:33 PM | Jonathan Morgan
Before going into this match, Nadal knew he was going to win. But Schuettler put up more of a fight than most people believed he would.

The first set started off with Nadal on fire. He didn't committ a single unforced error the entire set and only lost 1 baseline rally the entire set. He was serving well, moving it around, keeping Schuettler guessing, and pummeling his forehand.

The second set saw Nadal fall into a bit of a lull. Perhaps he was already thinking of the impending final with Federer, or perhaps because his shoes were bothering him. He slipped many times in this match and his movement didn't look as awesome as it usually is. Schuettler broke early in the set and played well to get it to 5-4 so he can serve it out. Nadal upped his level here and broke back. They went to a tiebreak where Nadal just played a perfect breaker to take the set.

After that, Schuettler seemed a bit demoralized and unhopeful about the match. Nadal jumped on this to get the early break in the third. He could have closed the match out with a blistering forehand winner when Schuettler served at 3-5, 15-40, but Nadal put that ball into the net. Rafael made amends, however, as he served it out without trouble.

Nadal will make his third straight appearance in a Wimbledon final on Sunday.

  • Thumbs up

A finely played match from Nadal, and Schuettler as well as the old veteran kept the score respectable.

  • Thumbs down

Nadal cannot have a lapse in concentration like in that second set in the final. Federer will not be as forgiving as Schuettler.
