  • Cilic beats out fading light and Mathieu to reach 2nd week

    6/29/08 7:03 PM | Jonathan Morgan
In a match that ended at 9:27 PM in London, 19 year old Marin Cilic reaches his first slam 2nd week.

Marin Cilic and Paul-Henri Mathieu are no strangers. This was the 5th time they'd played this year alone and the 3rd week in a row on grass.

The first set was tight and went into a breaker that Mathieu won just barely. The second set saw Cilic save tons of break points from Mathieu.

The 2nd and 3rd sets went much to form with Cilic serving big (18 total aces) and Mathieu not being able to get to them or even stay with the Croat from the back. Cilic was murdering forehands as flat as pancakes, a strategy that is very effective on the grass courts.

In the 4th, Cilic got up an early break as he light continued to fade and it looked like he would be able to get into the locker room without having to come out on Monday to finish his match. However, Mathieu broke back and had a set point late in the set. Cilic saved it and it went into a breaker. Mathieu again went up a mini-break but Cilic saved it and took the match.

If Mathieu had taken the 4th set, they for sure would have had to come back on Monday. As it were, that did not happen and Wimbledon is completely on schedule heading into the second week, a stark contrast to last year.

Cilic will face Arnaud Clement in the Round of 16.

  • Thumbs up

Great win for Cilic to reach his first slam 4th round.

  • Thumbs down

Tons of opportunities missed by Mathieu, a standard of his career.
