  • Brilliant Wawrinka blows away Zverev challenge

    6/29/08 1:10 AM | David Cox
Stanislas Wawrinka continues to provide some company for compatriot Roger Federer. The Swiss no 2 made the second week of a slam for the 2nd time when Mischa Zverev retired at 7-5, 6-1 down in round 3

Zverev was struggling with injury but he also had little answer to his opponent's returning ability. The left-handed German is a canny serve-volleyer, using his sliding serve to great effect early on but Wawrinka started to pick it with increasing success and at 5-5 in the first he unleashed a series of stunning returns which left Zverev stranded. The floodgates then opened and it wasn't long before Zverev called it a day

Marcos Baghdatis wore down another big serving German Simon Stadler. The qualifier has enjoyed a dream run to the last 32, taking out Ivo Karlovic along the way. However Baghdatis's quality showed it a 7-6, 6-4, 6-2 win. As ever in these matches, the first set breaker was huge, you sensed Stadler's only real chance of an upset was if he could win it. Instead he didn't come close, Baghdatis taking it 7-2 and from there on, the 10th seed relaxed and Stadler lost hope

Baghdatis now plays Spain's Feliciano Lopez, now a regular in the latter stages of this tournament. If you'd had a bet last weekend that Bobby Reynolds would be the last American standing in this year's Wimbledon, you'd be a very rich man right now. Reynolds has been described in the past as “a poor man's Roddick” but he got one round further than the 6th seed before the textbook grass court tennis of Lopez took him through 6-4, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, smashing 24 aces and 57 winners
