Spaniard Rafael Nadal had an unexpectedly easy time getting past the fatigued Mikhail Youzhny. Nadal is now into his third straight Wimbledon quarterfinal, which he will play against an inspired Andy Murray.
Mikhail Youzhny was supposed to give Rafael Nadal a difficult test in this round of 16 encounter. The two men played in the same round in last year's Wimbledon, and Youzhny took the first two sets from Nadal. The Spaniard eventually won in five. Those who expected a close and high quality match were sorely disappointed. Youzhny came out of the blocks flat and weary and he got progressively flatter and more tired as the match progressed.
The biggest drama of the match occurred in the second game, when Nadal tweaked his knee and had the tour trainer come out and put more tape on it. Perhaps Youzhny thought he had a chance if Nadal were hobbled - he would have been wrong. After the tape job, Nadal got back to work in a fantastic display of grass court tennis.
The Russian was certainly not at his best, and the temptation is to attribute his loss to his dismal play. Nothing could be further from the truth. After the first set, Nadal played crisp, tight tennis. He volleyed well, served superbly and got plenty of looks on Youzhny's serve.
Nadal heads to the quarterfinals to play Briton Andy Murray.
Rafael Nadal continues to show how much his grass court game has improved over the past few years. He played a fantastic match.
Mikhail Youzhny's third round match took so much out of him that he was clearly no match for Nadal.
