Mario Ancic defeats David Ferrer in four grueling sets on Friday to reach the fourth round of Wimbledon. Only Fernando Verdasco stands between Ancic and a third quarterfinal appearance.
Mario Ancic got the best of David Ferrer when it mattered most.
Just one week after losing Ferrer at the Ordina Open, Ancic upset the fifth-seeded Spaniard in the Wimbledon third round 6-4, 6-4, 6-7(5), 7-6(3). It took three hours and 11 minutes and almost every second featured spirited and commendable tennis.
The first two sets only looked like a mismatch on paper because Ancic simply came out blazing, not because Ferrer played poorly. One break of serve made the difference in each frame, as Ancic refused to yield even a single break point to Ferrer during that span. The 6'5'' Croat lost only nine points in his first 10 service games and dropped just three points on serve in the first set.
Ferrer could not gain any momentum against his opponent's serve in the third set either, but this time he took care of all six of his own service games. Ancic failed to put in a single first serve in the tiebreaker and that allowed Ferrer to get back in the match trailing just two sets to one.
An epic fourth set progressed similarly to third, with neither player able to make much headway into the other's serve en route to a tiebreaker. Ancic's ever-increasing aggressiveness (he approached the net 32 times in the fourth) paid off in the decider, as the No. 43 player in the world came up with several clutch volleys. After 72 minutes of play in the fourth set, Ferrer netted a backhand off a solid Ancic return to end it.
Ancic next faces No. 22 seed Fernando Verdasco, a 6-4, 6-4, 6-0 winner over Tomas Berdych. In their only previous meeting just a few weeks ago at Queen's Club, Ancic took out the Spaniard 7-6(6), 6-4.
Ancic fired 23 aces and won 84 percent of his first-serve points.
Ferrer was 0-for-6 on break-point chances.
