In the least watched match of Mega Monday, Arnaud Clement continues his quiet run to the Wimbledon Quarterfinals.
From the opening ball, it just didn't seem to be Cilic's day. Perhaps it had to do with the 5 setter he played the last round and his stamina isn't *quite* up to the ATP slam par, or perhaps it was the pressure knowing that he had a great shot of reaching the semis. Whatever the case, he could not get it done.
Credit to Clement, however, as he played a steady, smart, consistent game, making just 9 errors all match as compared to 33 from the young Croat. Cilic's serve was off as well, and Clement was able to get into Marin's service games early and often. 5 of 9 on break points was Clement, a fine number.
All in all, the entire match went pretty much to form. Cilic seemed nervous at the match and the situation and played as such. His serve lacked its usual bite, he moved sluggishly, and his forehand was misfiring. Clement, being the veteran he is, recognized this and played a smart tactical match, doing only what was needed and letting Cilic self-destruct, something he did.
Clement will face off with fellow early 2000's Australian Open finals Agassi fodder, Rainer Schuettler, for a spot in the semis.
A smart match from Clement, realizing the situation and doing what he needed to do.
Cilic has a great upside but this was his first foray this deep into a slam. Next time, he shouldn't be as nervous.
