Sam Querrey destroys Tomas Berdych on Day 2 of the U.S. Open. He will play Nicolas Devilder in the second round.
Tomas Berdych absolutely manhandled Sam Querrey earlier this season, but on Tuesday Querrey returned the favor in emphatic fashion. The 6'6'' American crushed the 22nd-seeded Berdych 6-3, 6-1, 6-2 in the day's first match on the Grandstand. Querrey needed less than 90 minutes to book his place in the U.S. Open second round, where he will take on Frenchman Nicolas Devilder.
Querrey broke serve in the first game of the match and quickly secured two more breaks , the last of which finished off the opening frame of play. He was sending a decisive message that this affair would not be like the one they contested back in March, when Berdych erased Querrey 6-1, 6-2 at the Masters Series Miami.
The American also broke Berdych in his first return game of set two, taking a 2-0 lead. Querrey saved the only break point he saved, so two breaks of his own were enough to seize the second set without any trouble whatsoever.
Accepting that it just wasn't his day, the Czech put up little resistance in set three. Berdych won just four points in four return games and held serve just twice. Querrey took the set just as easily as he did the previous two to finish off the upset victory.
It will be the first-ever meeting between Querrey and Devilder when they do battle for a spot in the third round.
Querrey fired 11 aces and won 88 percent of his first-serve points
All around awful stuff from Berdych
