He didn't drop a set but this was far from routine for Nicolay Davydenko who really had to earn a 3rd round place against a determined Agustin Calleri who deserved more from his perfomance yesterday
In a career which has spanned nearly 10 years on tour, Calleri has only made the 3rd round 3 times in slams, a surprising lack of success given the weapons he possesses but
the margins at this level are so fine
He matched Davydenko shot for shot for the first 2 sets but both times at 4-4, Davydenko showed why he's made two US Open semi-finals, upping the pressure, and it told.
The first time, Calleri let a close line call on his serve get to him and he gifted the break with a wild backhand. In set 2 it was once more simple errors which cost him.
Despite the disappointment of dropping his serve both times in such fashion, Calleri continued to believe he could turn it around and produced some inspired tennis to retrive a break in the 3rd. Davydenko had to draws on all his reserves of speed as the two produced a throroughly entertaining set, dazzling the crowd as Calleri went for the lines and somehow the Russian kept working his way back in the points
However when it came to the crunch in the tiebreak Calleri could not quite maintain the inch-perfect accuracy of his shots and Davydenko came through 7-2
Roger Federer was given a decent workout by Thiamo Alves but the Swiss never really needed to get out of 2nd gear and could always turn it on when needed, running out a 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 winner
